* Confucian Globalization : Toward a ¡°Fused-Market¡± Order

Author: Rhee Pil-woo
(Prof. Emeritus, Konkuk University, Seoul Korea)
Publisher: The Korean Taxpayers Union Press
Price: US$ 23.00

Confucian and globalization are two words we don't often see side by side. And that, at its most basic, is perhaps the best reason to resist the initial urge to put Rhee Pil-woo's new volume down.
In it, the author seeks to blend the hard, rational-actor centric economics of the west with the caring, community bent philosophies of Confucianism. Delineating a ``fused market'' paradigm to characterize his view, he concludes that the failings of unbridled
capitalism can be mended and made to work for society as a whole.

There are those who will say that Rhee is past his time but who knows? With none other than the likes of Eisuke Sakakibara once again trumpeting the successes of the Japanese model for economic development and professing the need for alternatives to the ``pure and coldly selfish'' Anglo-American forms of capitalism, who knows? Perhaps Dr. Rhee is ahead of his time. Don't sell your derivatives yet; but don't discard this alternative perspective, either.
